It felt like
Super Bowl Sunday, but at a smaller level, as about
700 New York Giants fans filled Center Court at the
Poughkeepsie Galleria on Tuesday to greet Giants Pro
Bowl wide receiver Victor Cruz."Any time you're
playing in late January, and you've got the chance to
play for a Super Bowl, it's always a good feeling,"
said Cruz, who was appearing at an autograph signing
for Dream Team Promotions. "We're excited for the
opportunity."The Giants will play the San Francisco
49ers for the NFC title on Sunday at Candlestick Park
in San Francisco for a berth in Super Bowl XLV on Feb.
5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
New York last made the
Super Bowl in 2008 when it defeated the New England
Patriots to win Super Bowl XLII. "It's been a great
run and Victor's been a tremendous part of the success,"
said Steven Bleier, 29, of Hopewell Junction. "We're
all excited to see him. We wouldn't be where we are
without Victor." Bleier's friend, Cathy Pascarelli,
24, of Cortlandt Manor, likes the style Cruz brings
to the gridiron. "I love the salsa dance he does
in the end zone," Pascarelli said. "It's one
of my favorites." Cruz, 25, an undrafted free agent
out of the University of Massachusetts, signed with
the Giants prior to the 2010 season. His play was limited
to three games in that campaign. This season he was
selected to the Pro Bowl and led the Giants in receiving
yards with 1,536 -- a Giants single-season record. "It's
crazy," Cruz said. "The fans are great. They've
always been great. I'm glad they accept my career and
accept my path. I love them."
As for Giants fans looking
ahead to Sunday's title game with San Francisco, Cruz
had a simple message."Just keep supporting us,"
Cruz said. "We're going to come out and play our
hearts out. We're a hot team right now, and hopefully
we'll stay that way all the way to the Super Bowl."
Kris Ketchum, 10, of Mastic, Long Island, made the three-plus
hour drive from Suffolk County with his dad, Chris,
for the chance to meet Cruz and get some autographs.
"Victor Cruz is awesome," the younger Ketchum
said. "He's really a great football player. He
makes awesome catches and he helps the Giants team a
lot." "We took it nice and easy with the weather
to get some autographs,"
the elder Ketchum said. "It's
worth it. We have a New York Giants room in our house,
so it's a little bit to add to the memorabilia."
The younger Ketchum had a bold prediction for Sunday's
game. "I think the Giants are going to kick butt
and we're going to the Super Bowl," he said.
